“We believe in the critical importance of basic research and appreciate the community outreach they do.  We feel like a part of the MDIBL
family and making a planned gift was a way for us to connect beyond our selves.”

Allan Kleinman
Volunteer

Allan Kleinman is an active volunteer and supporter of many nonprofit organizations on Mount Desert Island, including the Community Lab at the MDI Biological Laboratory.  A retired electrical engineer, Allan began volunteering as a citizen scientist in 2011 as part of our partnership with Maine Healthy Beaches to help monitor water quality and protect public health at Maine’s participating coastal beaches.

“We support a lot of non-profits on the island, but MDI Biological Laborary goes out of their way to make us and the community feel welcome,” says Kleinman. “We believe in the critical importance of basic research and appreciate the community outreach they do.  We feel like a part of the MDIBL family and making a planned gift was a way for us to connect beyond our selves.  In speaking with our financial advisor and looking at our taxes, we decided that making a gift from our IRA made a significant difference in our tax situation. Everybody’s situation is different, but the benefits to us were considerable and we were able to support the work of MDIBL for years to come.”

This time of year, as you consider how best to support the causes closest to your heart, consider a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) or IRA charitable rollover.

If you are at least 70 ½ years old and have a traditional IRA, there’s a smart way to give to MDI Biological Laboratory.  You can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), from your IRA that is 100% tax free, whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return.   Individuals age 70 ½ and older can distribute up to $100,000 each year from their IRAs to their favorite non-profits without counting the distribution as income.
