MDI Biological Laboratory Will Use New Animal Model to Study Aging

January 13, 2020

Thanks to a $75,000 grant from The Cotswold Foundation, the MDI Biological Laboratory will add the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri) to its growing roster of animal models, thus strengthening the institution’s longstanding tradition of engaging in comparative research to gain an understanding of the mechanisms involved in aging and regeneration.

MDI Biological Scientists Identify Pathways That Extend Lifespan by 500 Percent

January 8, 2020

Scientists at the MDI Biological Laboratory, in collaboration with scientists from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, Calif., and Nanjing University in China, have identified synergistic cellular pathways for longevity that amplify lifespan fivefold in C. elegans, a nematode worm used as a model in aging research.

‘Spatial patterns in well water quality: A view from MDI’ to be subject of Science Café

January 3, 2020

In a January 13 Science Café entitled “Spatial patterns in well water quality: A view from MDI,” Sarah Hall, Ph.D., will talk about how the iconic geology of this region of Maine plays a role in what’s in our drinking water.
