Hannah Somers, a research assistant in the Rollins lab, created this composite image of L1 C. elegans. C. elegans have four larval stages before adulthood – L1 is the first larval stage after hatching.

MDI Biological Laboratory's Rollins lab created this microscopy image of the worm C. elegans.

These images were taken to understand how intermittent fasting impacts L1 C. elegans and protein translation rates. L1 C. elegans enter an ageless state of arrest when fasted, making them an ideal model to study aging:

  • The red in the “ornament” worms shows the location of the ribosome, which produces protein.
  • The green in the “tree” are muscle fibers used to pinpoint the location of the ribosome.
  • The white in some “decorations” are proteins newly synthesized since the start of fasting. The DNA in these worms are colored gold.
  • Finally, the “candy canes” also demonstrate the muscle in white and ribosomes in red.

With images like these, we can investigate the changes that allow C. elegans to exist in this ageless state and how this impacts health in adults.Ultimately, from these studies, the Rollins lab is helping understand how changes in diet can promote longer and healthier lives in humans.
