The Maine IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is a collaborative network of Maine educational and research institutions led by the MDI Biological Laboratory and sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Each student is associated with a specific research project in the biomedical field, where s/he works closely with the faculty, other researchers and students.
- Open to undergraduates enrolled in specific Maine colleges and universities: Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, College of the Atlantic, Southern Maine Community College, UMaine Farmington, UMaine Machias, UMaine Fort Kent, UMaine Presque Isle, UMaine Honors College and University of New England.
- Research sites include MDI Biological Laboratory and Northeast scientific research sites across Maine, Delaware, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire
- INBRE fellows receive housing, meal plans, and stipends. Travel is not funded.
Other Funding Sources
Other private funding sources are sometimes available, with various eligibility requirements and award amounts. Outstanding applicants for summer INBRE fellowships may be selected for other available funding awards for research at MDI Biological Laborataory.
Online applications require the uploading of student-copy transcripts with fall semester grades, a resume/CV, and answers to several essay questions. Two faculty references are required, which are requested through the online application form. The online application system allows starting, saving for later, logging out, and logging back in to continue editing and augmenting information.
Decision notification letters are sent to applicants in late March/early April.
