Undergraduate and High School Programs
Our high school and undergraduate programs engage students in scientific explorations in aging and regenerative biology and offer opportunities to build skills necessary for successful careers in the biological sciences. Research opportunities focus on uncovering basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying regenerative and aging processes in various animal model systems, including zebrafish, African turquoise killifish, nematodes and axolotls.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)
Two undergraduate summer fellowship programs run in conjunction and support students working in the laboratories of resident or visiting scientists doing hands-on research projects:
- IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Fellowship Program
- NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Fellowship Program
During the 10-week residential mentored research experiences, students also receive other educational opportunities, including an extensive scientific seminar program, professional development workshops and dedicated residential life programs.
Applications for both programs typically open in late fall.
High School Program
We offer Biomedical Bootcamp as a one-week, non-residential program during the summer for high school students entering their junior or senior year. Participants engage with scientists at MDI Biological Laboratory to explore the rich landscape of opportunities and career paths in biomedicine, research, and entrepreneurship in Maine and beyond.
Registration for Biomedical Bootcamp typically opens in the winter.
