Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Karl John Karnaky, Jr.

When Karl Karnaky’s family reflects on his long career in science, one place stands out — MDI Biological Laboratory. For him, it was more than just a summer retreat for experimentation; it was the catalyst that shaped his identity as a scientist and as a mentor.

A Lifelong Curiosity, Sparked Early

Karl’s passion for discovery began in his Texas childhood, peering into a microscope in his father’s medical office. The sense of wonder that was born there carried him through a distinguished research career, as he focused on epithelial transport — the complex but elegant ways that nutrients, water and ions move across the membranes that surround many of our organs.

His wife, Sue Turner, recalls his fearless approach to science:

“He always thought outside the box—I’m not sure he even knew there was a box. He saw connections others didn’t, and while not everything worked out, that’s the nature of science. So much of success in discovery science comes from creativity and a lack of fear of failure.”

The Awakening Place

Karl received his Ph.D. from Rice University. Starting in the 1970s, his post-doctoral work at MDI Bio Lab opened new possibilities for his scientific journey.

During his time in Salisbury Cove he found not only cutting-edge research, but a place where he could nurture his love of teaching, among an exceptionally supportive community of accomplished mentors and collaborators.

It was a place where his curiosity flourished, broadening his perspective in ways that would shape his scientific outlook for years to come. It also became a home away from home, and over the course of 30 years, time and again, he would return to the island and the Lab.

“MDI Bio Lab was his awakening place,” Sue reflects. “It was the world blossoming for him. The rigor of the work, the caliber of the scientists—there was nothing quite as intellectually stimulating.”

Beyond research, Karl was a passionate educator. He brought science to life for his students, sometimes speaking so quickly in excitement that his family wondered if the class could keep up. His dedication to mentorship extended beyond the classroom—he wanted to ensure future generations had the same opportunities he did.

“In addition to his own scientific inquiry, he really wanted to share science and his passion for it with others,” his daughter Alissa recalls.

A Legacy That Lives On

Because MDI Bio Lab had such a lasting impact on Karl, his family chose to honor his memory with a planned gift, ensuring that future scientists can benefit from the same transformative experiences he had. Through the Karl John Karnaky, Jr., Ph.D. Mentorship Fund, his legacy will continue to inspire and support young researchers.
