Overview
The 2024 African Turquoise Killifish Conference – shedding light on aging, development, and beyond.
Situated in the captivating environment of Mount Desert Island, this meeting is aimed to serve as a community hub for all who are dedicated and interested in killifish, providing an opportunity for research in different fields to collaborate, share knowledge, and network in person.
Looking ahead, this conference sets the stage for future biennial meetings. We are excited and looking forward to seeing you all in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Housing assignments and arrival logistics will be sent to all attendees closer to the start of the conference.

Tuition
Tuition: $600 USD in-person participation | $50 USD on-line participation
The in-person tuition includes all meals and housing.
Travel
The MDI Biological Laboratory is located at 159 Old Bar Harbor Road, Salisbury Cove, Maine.
Driving
The MDI Biological Laboratory is 6 hours northeast of Boston, Massachusetts, and 3 hours northeast of Portland, Maine.
From Ellsworth:
- Take Route 3 East towards Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park.
- After crossing the bridge onto Mount Desert Island, bear left on Route 3 towards Bar Harbor.
- In 4.3 miles, turn left onto Old Bar Harbor Road.
- The MDI Biological Laboratory is 300 feet ahead on the left.
Flying
The MDI Biological Laboratory is served by two airports – Bar Harbor Regional (BHB), with direct flights from Boston Logan (BOS), and Bangor International (BGR) with direct flights from NYC, Philadelphia, Detroit, and other hubs. Bar Harbor Airport is only about 15 minutes away from the lab, whereas Bangor is a 1.25 hour drive. If you have special mobility needs, please be aware that the Bar Harbor Airport is only served by small planes that load/unload directly from the tarmac. Bangor has some skywalks but also small planes that load/unload from the tarmac.
Several car rental agencies are available at the Bangor and Bar Harbor Airports. The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle is most economical ride from Bangor, but you MUST reserve well in advance and you may have to wait for additional arrivals at the airport. Taxi companies are listed at the airport websites. Uber or Lyft are sometimes available, however the services are not as prevalent as in more metropolitan areas. Taxi and other transportation reservations should be made well in advance; on-demand service in this rural area is not always available.
