The MDI Biological Laboratory seeks to hire a second summer research technician to assist with water quality monitoring and a variety of marine restoration and conservation projects.
We engage volunteers and community partners in many aspects of our water quality monitoring work, as part of our collaboration with the Maine Healthy Beaches Program and the Maine Volunteer Phytoplankton Monitoring Program. There is a significant outreach and education required for this position, the summer technician will be expected to interact with the public, educating them about our work and the importance of clean water, when he or she is out in the field collecting samples for analysis.
In addition to our water quality monitoring work, we have been coordinating the efforts of the Frenchman Bay Partners to achieve an ecologically and economically healthy future for Frenchman Bay. The Frenchman Bay Partners have created a Bay Management Plan that focuses on four conservation targets, including eelgrass habitat. The Community Environmental Health Laboratory (CEHL) has planned multiple eelgrass restoration projects for summer 2017, which include pre-and post-project water quality monitoring. The summer technician will be expected to assist with all aspects eelgrass restoration, including volunteer recruitment and management.
