Job Summary

The Computational Biology/Bioinformatics Core at the MDI Biological Laboratory (MDIBL) has an immediate opening for a Bioinformatician. This position combines both research support and teaching, with an equal emphasis and effort.

The Bioinformatician will work with the CompBio Core team and our research partners to develop, debug, and maintain genomic analysis pipelines. He/she will also meet frequently with the research groups and the Core director, such that interactions are an ongoing collaboration.

The Working Environment

The CompBio Core supports the research groups at MDIBL, as well as the broader Maine INBRE research community, following best practices in making genomic data analysis robust, rigorous, and reproducible. Our collaborators study a broad range of scientific questions, using several model and non-model organisms, including zebrafish, nematode, axolotl, among others.
MDIBL hosts multiple courses and workshops, both in person and online, with the goal of incorporating computational analysis and approaches in an appropriate and engaging manner.

Required Skills/Experience

– Bachelor’s degree or higher in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field
– Proficiency in the Unix Command-line environment
– Strong understanding of probability and statistics
– Demonstrated programming knowledge in Python, R, or an equivalent language
– Fundamental understanding of gene expression and genetics
– Previous experience analyzing genome-scale nucleic acid sequence data

Preferred Skills/ Experience

– Experience maintaining or programming databases
– Proficiency with Git/Github version control
– Previous teaching experience in bioinformatics
– Experience with Docker or Singularity container systems
– Knowledge of Bash Scripting
