MDI Biological Laboratory

Impact Report 2025

MDI Biological Laboratory made remarkable strides in 2025 because of your continued generosity and support.
We could not have achieved all we did without our community — thank you!

2025 — A year of discovery & resilience
2025 — A year of discovery & resilience

Our heartfelt thanks for your generous support!

Dear Friends,

In science—as in life—progress rarely follows a straight line. The past year reminded us of this in many ways. 2025 was marked by uncertainty, rapid change, and unexpected challenges, particularly in the landscape of federal support for biomedical research. Yet throughout these challenges, the MDI Bio Lab community remained focused on what matters most: discovery, collaboration, and impact.

Our scientists, students, and staff continued to ask bold questions about how living systems function, adapt, age and regenerate. They did so with perseverance, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to advancing knowledge that ultimately benefits human health and the world around us.

The results of this shared effort are reflected in the accomplishments highlighted in this year’s Impact Report. In 2025, MDI Bio Lab scientists published 23 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributing new insights to fields ranging from regeneration and aging to environmental health and RNA biology. Our researchers also secured $2.9 million in new federal awards, supporting innovative projects that push the boundaries of basic science.

Equally important is the community that surrounds and sustains this work. Our graduate program supported 21 students, the next generation of scientists who will carry forward the spirit of curiosity and discovery that defines MDIBL. Our courses and conferences brought 602 scientists and trainees to campus, creating an environment where ideas and knowledge are exchanged freely.

Beyond the laboratory, our commitment to public engagement continues to grow. In 2025, 1,330 people joined our Science Cafe conversations, and 1,781 participants took part in outreach and education programs designed to share the excitement of science with our neighbors and communities.

None of this would be possible without you.

Your philanthropic support— a record $10.5 million in 2025—plays a vital role in sustaining our mission, particularly at a time when federal research funding is increasingly uncertain. Your generosity provides stability, enables bold ideas to take shape, and allows our scientists to pursue discoveries that may otherwise remain unexplored.

What inspires me most is the shared sense of purpose that defines our community. Scientists, students, donors, visitors, and friends all contribute to the spirit that makes this institution special. Together, we transform challenges into opportunities and strengthen the foundation for the discoveries of tomorrow.

Thank you for standing side by side with us to advance biomedical science through challenge and change.

With my sincere gratitude,
Hermann Haller, M.D.
